As for St. Agatho, as you know, he defended the Apostolic See, not Honorius. St. Agatho correctly stated that the Holy See never taught heresy because Honorius' heretical views were espoused in a public letter to Sergius, not formally defined as a dogma of the Church. Nevertheless, the Pope did fall into error, but it was never pronounced ex cathedra.

By the way, I'm new to your blog but I very much enjoy your articles. I'm also aware that he ...I'm aware of that. I'm also aware that he was condemned for allowing the heresy to spread unchecked rather than taking action. He wasn't condemned as being a heretic himself.

As I mentioned in the post, if Honorius was a Monothelite, I doubt that Pope John would have bothered offering the defense that he did. Or that Pope St. Agatho would have insisted that the Apostolic See had never taught heresy.

Regardless, his incompetence was and remains a scandal.Throwbackhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14896446477292839087noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1670360131617205450.post-19783191558898147042013-08-06T11:10:30.144-05:002013-08-06T11:10:30.144-05:00You know Honorius was condemned as a heretic at th...You know Honorius was condemned as a heretic at the sixth general council, right?Aneashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01261129458353660074noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1670360131617205450.post-60785028914298467812013-08-06T11:09:30.015-05:002013-08-06T11:09:30.015-05:00You know that Honorius I's writing were condem...You know that Honorius I's writing were condemned as heretical, right?
