Another Bishop Forbids Pro-Abortion Politicians from Receiving the Eucharist

Thanks to Rocco Palma at Whispers in the Loggia for breaking this one.

In a nutshell, Bishop Joseph Martino of Scranton is quite clear:

Furthermore, public officials who are Catholic and who persist in public support for abortion and other intrinsic evils should not partake in or be admitted to the sacrament of Holy Communion.

Page one of his letter on voter responsibilities is here. Page two, here.

He also gives a good shpiel on the whole "single issue" criticism that Catholics tend to get, along with the idea of abortion and "proportionality" with other issues. Quoting from his predecessor:

"They (Catholics) are wrong when they assert that abortion does not concern them, or is only one of a multitude of issues of equal importance. No, the taking of innocent human life is so heinous, so horribly evil, and so absolutely opposite to the law of Almighty God that it must take precedence over every other issue. I repeat. It is the single most important issue confronting not only Catholics, but the entire electorate."

Bravo, Your Excellency. Bravo.
